Heal From Trauma with Compassionate, Evidence-Based Care in Portland Oregon

Trauma can leave lasting effects on your mind, body, and relationships long after the event has passed. You may find yourself constantly on edge, emotionally numb, struggling with anxiety, avoiding certain situations, or feeling disconnected from the life you want to live.

At One You Psychology, we provide compassionate, trauma-informed therapy for children, teens, and adults across Oregon. Our therapists use evidence-based approaches including Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) to help you process painful experiences, strengthen emotional resilience, and move toward healing at a pace that feels safe.

Whether your trauma stems from childhood experiences, abusive relationships, accidents, medical events, military service, grief, or years of chronic stress, recovery is possible.

What is Trauma?

Trauma isn’t defined only by what happened, it’s also about how those experiences continue to affect your nervous system and daily life.

Many people seek trauma therapy because they’re experiencing:

  • Anxiety or panic attacks
  • Flashbacks or intrusive memories
  • Difficulty trusting others
  • Emotional numbness
  • Feeling constantly “on guard”
  • Nightmares or sleep problems
  • Shame or guilt
  • Irritability or anger
  • Relationship difficulties
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Emotional overwhelm
  • Using alcohol, substances or avoidant behaviors to cope

Trauma can result from a single event or from repeated experiences over time. Childhood neglect, emotional abuse, bullying, medical trauma/illness, domestic violence, loss or chronic stress can all leave lasting emotional wounds.

EMDR Therapy for Trauma

One of the evidence-based treatments we may recommend is Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR).

EMDR helps the brain process traumatic memories that may continue to trigger emotional distress long after the event has ended. Rather than repeatedly reliving painful experiences, EMDR helps many people reduce the emotional intensity of traumatic memories while building healthier emotional responses.

Research has shown EMDR can be effective for:

  • PTSD
  • Childhood trauma
  • Complex trauma
  • Anxiety
  • Panic attacks
  • Medical trauma
  • First responders
  • Grief and loss
  • Distressing life experiences

Not every client needs EMDR, and not every trauma story is the same. Your therapist will work collaboratively with you to determine whether EMDR or another evidence-based approach best fits your goals and needs.

Trauma and Neurodiversity

Many individuals with ADHD or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) have experienced years of misunderstanding, masking, bullying, rejection, or repeated feelings of failure. These experiences can create trauma responses that continue well into adulthood.

At One You Psychology, neurodiversity is one of our specialties. We understand how trauma, ADHD, autism, anxiety, and emotional regulation often overlap. Our therapists provide affirming, individualized care that recognizes both the challenges and strengths of neurodivergent individuals.

Trauma and Addiction

Many people turn to alcohol, drugs, or other coping behaviors to manage overwhelming emotions related to trauma.

Rather than asking “What’s wrong with you?” we ask “What happened to you?”

Healing unresolved trauma often reduces the need for unhealthy coping strategies and supports lasting recovery. For many people, treating trauma and addiction together leads to better long-term outcomes than treating either concern alone.

PTSD & Complex PTSD (CPTSD)

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Complex PTSD (CPTSD) can develop after experiencing overwhelming or repeated trauma. While PTSD is often associated with a single traumatic event such as an accident, assault, or military service, Complex PTSD typically results from ongoing experiences like childhood abuse, neglect, domestic violence, or chronic emotional trauma. Our goal is to help you process painful experiences, reduce trauma symptoms, rebuild a sense of safety, and create lasting healing rather than simply coping with the past.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is EMDR therapy?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an evidence-based therapy that helps the brain process traumatic memories so they become less emotionally overwhelming. It is widely used to treat PTSD, childhood trauma, anxiety, and other trauma-related concerns.

Is EMDR covered by insurance?

Yes. When EMDR is provided as part of medically necessary mental health treatment, it is typically billed as a standard psychotherapy session and is often covered by insurance. Coverage depends on your individual plan.

Do I need to have PTSD or CPTSD to benefit from trauma therapy?

No. Many people seek trauma therapy for childhood experiences, relationship trauma, grief, chronic stress, or difficult life events without meeting the criteria for PTSD.

Do you offer online trauma therapy?

Yes. We offer secure telehealth appointments throughout Oregon as well as in-person therapy at our SW Portland office.
