Empowering Neurodiversity
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurological and developmental difference that affects how a person communicates, learns, and behaves. Those with ASD experience a wide array of traits and strengths, and because it is a “spectrum disorder,” each individual’s experience with autism is unique.
Living with ASD means seeing and doing things in a way that’s genuinely your own. At OneYou, we take the time to understand each person as they are. Our focus is on what matters to you, supporting your choices and helping you explore your interests and goals in ways that feel meaningful.
TRAITS, STRENGTHS, CHALLENGES
Autism is more common than many people realize; millions worldwide are on the spectrum, and diagnoses continue to increase as awareness grows. ASD can show up in several different ways, which is why some individuals are identified early, while others may not learn they’re autistic until adulthood when lifelong patterns finally come into focus.
Traits associated with ASD can influence social interactions and sensory experiences, as well as the ways a person processes information. Clients might self-sooth with repetitive movements, prefer highly structured environments and schedules, or interpret language differently from typical expectations.
Alongside the challenges, autism brings positive traits that shine in many areas of life. People on the spectrum often have remarkable attention to detail and patterns, strong memory skills, deep focus on their interests, and creative or analytical thinking. At OneYou, we help clients recognize and leverage these qualities, supporting them in thriving while navigating the everyday challenges of life.
DIAGNOSING + TREATMENT
Our clinicians at OneYou diagnose autism through a thoughtful evaluation process, as there is no single medical test to identify it. We use a blend of observation and guided assessment tools to best understand a person and their experiences. This careful approach ensures each person is truly seen, allowing us to offer counseling that fits their individual needs.
It’s important to know that there is no “cure” for autism. ASD is one part of who someone is, and treatment isn’t about trying to change that core identity. Instead, we focus on helping our clients navigate challenges, build on their strengths, and live fulfilling lives. Our counselors provide therapy that is attentive to sensory sensitivities so that we can support the development of communication skills and learning strategies for daily life.
We integrate several mindfulness and strength-based therapies into autism treatment, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Internal Family Systems Therapy (IFS).
At OneYou, we honor neurodiversity and want to help you thrive on your own terms. Contact us to learn more about our approach. We offer telehealth statewide in Oregon or in-person sessions at our office in Portland, Oregon.
